How to Write With SEO in Mind

By:     Topics: Blog

SEO, or “Search Engine Optimization” is an important element when writing unique content. While many people will tell you to write for the reader, and not search engines, writing with SEO in mind will improve your content visibility.

The best bit is that you can use SEO without compromising your readers’ feelings.

Search engine optimization works with “keywords” and “key phrases.” These keywords can be anything from “pie” to “how to make money with monkey farming.”

The idea of using SEO in your content is to include specific “keywords” and “key phrases” so that search engines will read the content as relevant.

The challenge with search engine optimized content is that you don’t want to sound obvious when using keywords. Many people, when reading, register words and subconsciously count the amount of times they’re being used.

For example, if you happen to be a highly read individual, the repetition of words “and” and “the” will begin to irritate you.

However, even to a modest reader, the repetition of the word “pie” in a short (300 to 500 words) article will quickly become agitating.

This is the reason that the English language (and other languages as well) have synonyms and pronouns. Repeating the subject noun of a sentence is a mind irritant.

Keywords in content can end up the same way if you don’t know what you’re doing.

How to Use Keywords in Content for Better SEO

Using keywords to SEOptimize your content is easier than you think. It’s as simple as generating the desired phrase, and then incorporating it into your content in various forms so that the target keyword is being used, but different key phrases are masking it effectively.

For example, consider the following paragraph:

“You can make money online easily by flipping websites. Making money online through website flipping is easy when you use the flipper’s guide to flipping websites. Learning how to sell websites for profit and make money online through website flipping can be done with a few simple steps.”

Aside from the fact that the above paragraph is “begging the question” (how do you make money flipping websites!?), you can easily tell that this paragraph is made to include the words “website flipping” and “make money online” as much as possible to get the attention of a search engine.

Imagine an entire 300-600 word article written in this manner.

Does it irritate you?

Now consider this paragraph instead:

“You can easily make money online by flipping website. The practice of selling websites online is extremely lucrative if you know which techniques you should and should not use. Honest online money generating techniques for flipping and selling websites include building up and developing useful websites for sale.”

Notice how you still have the words “make money online” and “flipping websites” in the content. As well, the use of extended sentences and useful explanations spaces out these keywords and key phrases to make the reader feel like the content is leading to a point, instead of blatantly trying to attract search engine traffic.

In this way, the content is still SEOptimized, but not obstructive to the reader.

SEO = Clarity + Quality

Writing content with SEO in mind involves a few simple steps such as:

Clarity: Don’t lose the content in all of the keywords.

Spacing: Be sure to space out your keywords and key phrases so the reader isn’t irritated by the repetition.

Content Quality: If you don’t know what you’re talking about, it won’t matter how keyword rich your content is. Always put the essential information first!

If you don’t believe that this technique works, then go back and count the amount of times the words “keywords,” “search engine optimization,” and “key phrases” are used in this particular article itself.

It’s really that easy.

  1. This is great stuff. I’ve often faced that problem of having pronouns make sense in sentences, but pronouns don’t help your SEO work. Your suggestions on balance are a great help and highlight ways to make everyone happy.

    Nice article.

I would say SEO = Quality + Keywords

I decide the article I’m going to write
Reasearch on the top keywords related to it
Write the article in such a way I convey all that I want too and at the same time use the keywords appropriately.

    Cheers,
    Eddie Gear

  3. Chung Bey Luen says:

Great article. Personally I like your equation, SEO = Clarity + Quality.

  4. DTs Flash Drive Blog says:

I find the most fluent way to including keywords in posts and articles is to first write everything down as it comes and then restructure it with them. Mostly it’s just a case of replacing words and tweaking around a little. It helps of course if the keyword or phrase you’re targeting has several synonyms which have relative high search volumes as well.

  5. Creative Writing Tips says:

I think you summarized it well DT. It’s good to first get the article down in a high quality manner, and then to revise it with the knowledge of your intended keywords. That way you can be sure the quality is there, and then target the desired words as well.

  6. Agent 001 says:

Nice post Yan but I never support writing with SEO in mind. Write for th readers. When you write for the readers you will without knowing repeat your keywords and this will be good for SEO.

  7. this is a good thing to practice,, thanks for the share

Wow! This is another juicy article I have come across Google today. You have just shared very important things to be considered in optimizing content.

  10. Search Engine Marketing Specialist says:

1st: A note to the blog editors. Please moderate the comments and delete the vague link hoarders. They add nothing of value to the conversation!

Content optimization and keyword density has been a hot topic of debate amongst the SEO community for years. This article makes some great points, as do my fellow commenter’s, but there is one thing missing form the topic discussion.

Keywords laced into your user friendly content will not get you ranked in Google for competitive search terms. Even if you optimize your content, add the proper header tags, and place your top keyword in an H1, you’re not going to be 100% successful.

The key is to build high quality links, with your keyword in the anchor text!

This and the fact search engines are starting to move away from density calculations. They are looking more at contextual meaning than actual individual keywords on a page. I’m backing up the post above, not arguing it, as the recommendation is to move away from keyword stuffing in content.

My point is to write content for the target audience, and move even further away from explicit keyword placement. Work on building themed pages with closely related keywords!

After all Google is a broad match search engine . . .

    Thanks,
    Ryan Adami

  11. online marketing blog says:

You are right you need to add in keywords and phrases but don’t spam them. IT is a thin line that you need to get as close as possible to. Although link building does have its place and its a huge place. IF you don’t have the content on your site you wont rank for it. You need to write keyword dense content and build backlinks – it will not work if you do one and not the other.

  12. Ned Carey says:

    Hey Yan,

I think a lot of people write like the first example because they just don’t know how to write well. Your samples are great and make the point well.

Personally I don’t think about key words much when I am writing. i just try to write quality stuff and clearly, Just as you say. I have ranked on the first page for a number of items. Often things I never expected to be ranked for.

  13. Meeting rooms says:

Thanks for the post, I guess when it comes to SEO and keyword optimising on site. We’ll all have various strategies. SEO = Content + Architecture. Now a lot will argue but this works when you write normally with keywords in place.

  14. Healthcare Management says:

Writing quality content always been problem specially for non- seo technical person, lack of knowledge regarding seo content writing for both search engine as well reader of site been huge hurdle to do so need technical knowledge or Quality information which provided here thx for sharing such information it will be helpful for us.

  15. Marketing Man says:

Generally I find that writing with the keywords and/or keyword phrases in mind is adequate to ensure that your message comes across to both search engine spiders and readers alike. Try to write naturally, and just make sure your keywords are repeated at least twice in the in the 1st 100 worsds of your article, and right at the end of it too.

  16. I see a lot of blogs that are blatantly getting the attention of search engines. Most are auto-posters who simply have bots to post articles for them, which are duplicate articles that can be found almost anywhere in the search engine.

  17. Remote Data Backup says:

I’m a believer that you only need to have a specific keyword on the page once, given the following factors:

    1) The rest of the page’s content is relative to the keywords. Google’s Latent Semantic Indexing will take care of the rest.

    2) You have the keywords in anchor text in links pointing to the page. I think one good anchor text link is far more valuable than having that same keyword repeated on the page ad-infinitum.

Pretty much what SEM Specialist said above.

  18. Sammyspam says:

Great SEO post, SEO is always changing and its important to stay up with the latest.
Now you have to think about SEO even before your fingers hit the keyboard!

  19. It seems as though it’s a cycle. Building links develops pagerank and search engine positioning, that makes sites more atractive, private links a bought, eventually traffic rises, a motivation to write increases.

  20. Community says:

    hi,
Thanks for this nice post with have a good info related to good topic.there is good info of Search Engine Optimization.

  21. as long as you write good content and use keywords that there is less competiton for you will get good rankings quite quickly

  22. robert bloch says:

Thanks for the great ideas and thoughts. The new kid here, will use them in the future.
