Clever Advertising
Two years ago I was brainstorming about how to promote one of my websites. A competitor website knew about my website and so did many of his visitors, so naturally, they did not really want to carry my advertising.
So what did I do? – Putting up a banner with my logo etc was not really going to work – so what I did was come up with a banner that said “Dont Click Here”, – placing it on my competitors website. This technique increased my click through by about 100x and my website became one of the most popular visited websites for it’s niche.
When I saw the fart button just over a year back, I was thinking wow! There website was looking for anyone and everyone to visit there website, so if they advertised what there website was about, no one would click it. They humored people into clicking there adverts.
Today I was readying Quarter Wiki and noticed that on the most popular pages list was a link to a page called “Do Not View This Page”.
Why all three adverts worked so well (Dont Click Here, Do Not View This page and The Fart Button):
There are probably 100s of reason’s why people clicked our adverts, but mainly the reason was because we told them not to, or because they were amused by the advert.
Why would you off clicked the advert?

Very interesting!
I always click ones that say not to, its just my subconscious telling me to break the rule lol
It’s a subconcious human trait… We’re curious beings, we see something that says “Don’t do this/Don’t do that” we just get more tempted to do it and see what’s there…
Reverse psychology in action.
It’s not my favorite choice of advertising, but the principle is sound.
Grabbing attention in a market of attention-grabbers = loads of traffic.
I never actually clicked them because I knew what they were doing, and knew that it was working well with others. I didn’t want to be one of the thousands suckered into it lol.
Ironic… how stupid and fragile the human mind is.
