Making More Money Online With Less Time

By:     Topics: Blog,Making Money Online

I have been online for a few years now and one thing that use to take up a lot of time was finding and working with advertisers. Today I will be sharing with you a few techniques I use to find and keep my advertisers. With the tough financial times we are having lately, it is important you find and keep what advertisers you can get!

Life is pretty simple: You do some stuff. Most fails. Some works. You do more of what works. If it works big, others quickly copy it. Then you do something else. The trick is the doing something else.
– Leonardo da Vinci

Techniques to spend less time finding and keeping Advertisers

– Try to sell advertising for a few months at a time, for example I am often asked if I will sell 125 x 125 adverts for 6 months at a time, this would usually cost $300 but I will sell the spot for $250 it means I won’t have to find another advertiser for 6 months and will save a lot of time. Quite often a lot of blogs don’t completely sell out all there advertising spots so this is one step closer to achieving it. One webmaster was talking on his blog about how we shouldn’t be selling it for less but rather increase the price because we plan to grow in the next 6 months, so instead of $300 you should sell for $400, this doesn’t sound like a good deal to me and I am sure advertisers won’t appreciate it either.

– Have advertisers on Subscription, a lot of the time advertisers wouldn’t mind advertising you for more than one month. The problem is everything takes time and so when the 30 days are up, you have to spend time trying to sort out the next payment and days can easily be lost.

– It is worth sending every advertiser an email offering them a FREE advert or review if they agree to keep there subscription for a few months at a time. A lot of the time when a advertiser sees a email like this they will appreciate that you have reached out and used you initiative and will often reward it.

– Find a middleman, yes they take quite a cut of your revenue ( 25% – 50% ) but if you never have to spend time finding advertisers then that sounds like a pretty good deal to me. You can also just increase the price of your adverts, quite often the middleman finds advertisers at a higher price anyway. A couple great sites I use to sell my advertising is BuySellAds and Text-Link-Ads.

– Quite often a easy way to get an advertiser in the door is to advertise that you are looking for advertisers on webmaster marketplace’s such as Sitepoint and Digitalpoint, around 25% of all my advertisers have come from there.

Other techniques to earn more from your website without spending time finding advertiser

– Promoting affiliate products is one of my top earners for WebMakeMoney, every month people visit my website and will see a product they like the look of and will go ahead and purchase this. Quite often this makes me more money then selling advertising, but this technique works best when you sell them the idea, like my creating a website page.

– Promoting membership websites, this is just like promoting affiliate products but you will get a monthly payment. For example if you sell a membership that costs $50, you typically get 50% which is $25, you don’t just get it this month but every month that they keep the membership!

– Pay per click advertising, some company’s will provide you advertisers and you have publish their code, the only down side is the payouts can be quite low if you don’t place your adverts in the right place and have high traffic.

It is not just down to finding advertisers and keeping them happy, you have to be able to update your website often and provide value. You need to be able to give 100% so if someone or something influences you in your work place then that’s something you have to sort out.

  1. Nice information, this line about sums it up:

It is not just down to finding advertisers and keeping them happy, you have to be able to update your website often and provide value.

Overall a good guide on advertising and making money :)

  2. Your ideas about cutting deals for advertisers are great ideas. Offering longer, subsidized rates or buy some get one free deals catches the advertiser’s eyes and helps sway them to your side.

The challenge I have is finding the right people to contact to get advertising placed on the site.

    Michael,

I’m glad you are happy with BuySellAds.com! Thanks for the mention! Cheers, Todd

    Hello Xscape,

I haven’t had much luck seeking advertisers out apart from using Marketplaces like Sitepoint, have you tried a listing there before?

Todd, it seems to be working very well, when will you be out of Beta? We should do a interview for WebMakeMoney.com

  5. Thanks for the tips. I think a lot of people get into blogging for freedom then realize it’s a lot of work. NIce to see a few ways to cut back on hours and increase productivity.

  6. Funny Junk says:

These are some good ideas that should help me with increasing my revenue. The offering a free review if they keep their subscription for a few months should help increase my amount of advertisers.

  7. Hey – good post.

However one caveat is regarding text-links-ads. Website owners thinking about selling ads through them (and probably similar such services) are taking a chance Google will lower the Page Rank of their site.

Google has come out against selling links and routinely ‘penalizes’ sites selling such ads. The standard result is a lowering or even disappearing of PR, and nullifying the outbound ‘link juice’ from those advertising links. On the plus side, this penalizing doesn’t seem to affect organic rankings and thus traffic of the site showing the ads, but a lower page rank can affect other aspects of the site.

I have one site with text-link-ads that went from a PR 4 main page to a PR 1, whereas another site either stayed the same at PR4 or may have dropped from a 5 to a 4. Although people are still paying for Text Link Ads on both my sites (maybe they don’t confirm the listed PR on the TLA site, since no one changed the fact my one site went from a 4 to a 1) so it doesn’t bother me any.

    Just my 2 cents. :)

  8. The Blogger Source says:

Never really thought about selling multiple months at a time.

  9. portable tv says:

Nice comments on the middleman. Many can’t imagine using them because they take a big cut. But, if you’ve got some empty ad slots, how much are those making you?

  10. Exactly! There is no point having open advertising spots!

  11. Josh Carroll says:

Good information, much appreciated. The only issue is that until you have enough traffic to justify the monthly spend for affiliate programs, it might not be worth it to go that route. Once traffic and potential customers increases it makes sense. Would anyone agree with this?
